The Tell-Tale Heart / Uydurukçu Kalp

Solo exhibition of young artist Yeşim Akdeniz Graf who recently joined to Dirimart, can be viewed between May 24th and June 25th.

Yeşim Akdeniz Graf was among the young artists who were featured in the 2011 book ‘Rising’. The artist borrows the theme of her new exhibition in Dirimart from the

stories by Edgar Allan Poe. “The Tell-Tale Heart / Uydurukçu Kalp” is one part of the three exhibition series Graf has produced through her inspiration from Poe’s stories and poems. The first installment of the series happened last month in Fond Welters Galerie (Amsterdam) and was titled “Ulalume”. The second installment is “The Tell- Tale Heart” in Dirimart and the final installment of the series will be exhibited in June in PAK Kunstverein (Hamburg) and will be titled “Dream in a Dream”.

Akdeniz Graf, inspired by Edgar A. Poe’s short story “The Tell-Tale Heart”, reviews it as a metaphor on reckoning with the past. Along with Poe’s stories and poems, Yeşim Akdeniz Graf possesses a wide variety of strong works from Catherine Breillat’s films,

J.G. Ballard’s novels, Frued’s symbolisms and especially Camille Paglia’s “Sexual Personae – Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickenson”. Akdeniz Graf ’s works contain symbolism, romanticism, metaphors and posses a strong imaginary, utopian story boards. The artist possesses an ironic as well as a romantic annotation, while her belief that the prime retribution of today’s people are “modernism” and

“modern thought”. Akdeniz Graf investigates also through the symbolic language of her work, Freud’s sexist commentary which has shaped the perception in the 20th century. Yeşim Akdeniz Graf is also collaborating with Emre Irmak on a sound installation particularly designed for her exhibition “The Tell-Tale Heart”.

The artist graduated from Düsseldorf Art Academy in 2002. After living in Düsseldorf, Amsterdam and Berlin, Akdeniz Graf settled in Istanbul about two years ago. The

artists works are featured amongst various museums and special collections as well as some major cities; London, Berlin, Zurich, Dublin, Amsterdam and Hamburg.

Yeşim Akdeniz Graf ’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” can be viewed in Dirimart through May 24- June 25.
